They later entered the European show dog circuit-the Berna dog club was formed in 1899 and the breed earned the name "Bernese Mountain Dog" in 1904. When agriculture became less common in Switzerland, the breed made the leap from farm dog to family dog, watching over children and even pulling them in carts.
